Alarmed For Life! spreads across Howick Township

The Howick Township fire department has wrapped up it’s “Alarmed For Life!” program for this year.

Firefighters went door-to-door throughout the spring and summer, offering free smoke alarm inspections, testing, and replacement of ineffective smoke alarms.

According to Fire Chief Shawn Edwards, of the 436 homes visited in Howick, only 28 per cent were compliant with the Ontario Fire Code.

Over 130 out of date or non-functioning alarms were replaced, and more than 270 new smoke alarms were installed.

Chief Edwards said he encourages everyone to check and test their smoke alarms and make sure there is one on every floor of the home and outside sleeping areas.  Replace all smoke alarms that are over 10 years old, including hardwired electric devices.

According to the chief, you are 64 per cent more likely to survive a home fire with working smoke alarms.
