Orangeville fire chief Andy Macintosh is retiring just one year shy of his 30th year with the local fire department.

Macintosh, who has served with the Orangeville Fire Department for 29 years, will officially retire at the end of the month. He has served as chief of the largest fire department in Dufferin County for the last 16 years.

“I’m grateful for the opportunity to have worked for Orangeville and I appreciate the support I have had from many Councils over the years,” Macintosh said in a news release. “It’s been a great opportunity to have been part of the growth and evolution of the Orangeville Fire Department. I am particularly thankful for the help and support that I’ve had from staff and peers.”Andy Macintosh

Macintosh first joined the Orangeville Fire Department as a volunteer firefighter in 1987, before moving into a full-time position in 1992. He would become chief in 2000.

“Andy has served our town for decades with bravery, and a steadfast resolve for the welfare of our citizens,” Mayor Jeremy Williams said in a news release.

“With an unwavering commitment to his firefighting team and those they protect, Andy has been uncompromising in his years of dedication,” the mayor added. “Orangeville owes an enormous debt of gratitude to him and he will always be 'Chief Macintosh' to me.”

In 2007, Macintosh received the national Fire Services Exemplary Service Medal in recognition of 20 years of loyal and exemplary service to public security in Canada. He has also received the provincial Fire Services Long Service Medal marking 25 years of service, as well as the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and Queen’s Golden Jubilee medals.

Macintosh and wife Kathie have lived in Orangeville for nearly 50 years. His future includes establishing some new daily routines that will include golfing and camping in the warmer seasons.

“I want to thank Andy for his leadership in helping the Orangeville Fire Service develop into the first class, professional organization it is today,” said Coun. Gail Campbell, chair of the Orangeville fire board. “Our community is fortunate to have such excellent fire protection. Thank you, Andy, for your dedication. I wish you happiness and good health in your retirement.”
