35 YEAR CAREER IN EMERGENCY SERVICES
Fire Chief Garth Dyck is retiring this month, after 24 years in that role, and another 11 with the Atikokan Township Police. The Outers grad (1968-69) worked in various jobs (grocer, Steep Rock Iron Mines, line cutter, surveyor) before being hired December 21, 1981 by Atikokan Township Police. He moved over to the fire service in January, 1992, with the retirement of Finn Warren. In addition to his role with the department, Dyck served as the Town’s emergency measures coordinator and as chief building official, and has been heavily involved in a variety of regional initiatives, such as FireCon and Rainy River District Mutual Aid.
After accepting plaudits from the mayor, along with a parting gift, the Fire Chief expressed his thanks to all the volunteer firefighters, and their spouses, who have helped make Atikokan Fire Rescue a positive force in the community. “It’s not like any other volunteer organization,” he said.
Later in the meeting, Council approved the hiring of Graham Warburton, deputy chief for the past six years, as acting fire chief, and acting chief building official.
