Bargaining Workshop - Part I: Preparing for Bargaining - 9:00am to 12:00pm

Geared towards large urban, urban, and composite Chiefs, aimed at doing the groundwork to facilitate bargaining strategies and discussing such items as:

  • Bargaining checklist
  • Assessing comparator data
  • Obtaining a proper mandate
  • Comparator analysis
  • Drafting proposals
  • Co-ordinating efforts with your sector
  • Total compensation analysis

Bargaining Workshop - Part II: Panel Discussion - 1:00pm to 4:00pm

Geared towards suburban, rural, and composite Chiefs, aimed at providing strategies to get a deal including:  presenting your proposals, trying to get a deal, assessing what's a reasonable deal, timing to make a deal, when is it better to proceed to interest arbitration, strategies at mediation, does bargaining stop at interest arbitration.

Option 2: Managing in the Volunteer/Composite Fire Service Workshop

 

Managing in the Volunteer/Composite Fire Service - Part I - 9:00am to 12:00pm

The Managing in the Volunteer/Composite Fire Service Workshop is geared towards suburban, rural and composite Chiefs who manage volunteer firefighters.

The morning session will include volunteer firefighter employment relationships, the do's and don’ts of managing & discipline, attendance management, accommodation, grievance procedure and arbitration, wrongful dismissal, ESA and Income tax issues, OHSA, WSIB and more.

Managing in the Volunteer/Composite Fire Service Workshop - Part II - 1:00pm - 4:00pm

The afternoon session will cover current issues around Bullying and Harassment in Volunteer/Composite Fire Departments, including:

  • In recent years there has been an increase in the number of complaints about bullying and harassment which is occurring in smaller fire departments
  • Real life scenarios will be reviewed with regard to what can happen and how you can address it
  • Practical tips and tactic for investigations, fact finding, discipline and dealing with Council

Following that, there will be a panel and round table discussion regarding volunteer firefighter recruitment & retention best practices and advice and assistance to fire departments on how to effectively recruit and retain volunteer firefighters.
