(Jan 27, 2010)

A tenant and a firefighter suffered minor injuries early Saturday as a smoky fire forced evacuation of an 18-unit apartment building at 6z 1/3 myth St., fire officials reported.

A woman was treated in St. Catharines General Hospital for smoke inhalation suffered when she returned to her burning apartment to rescue her dog. The dog perished, fire officials said. The firefighter suffered a cut on his face that required hospital treatment, officials reported.

Firefighters contained the blaze in the first-floor apartment where it started at about 2 a. m. Investigators said it was started by a cigarette that was improperly disposed of. Damage was estimated at $450,000.
