Sault Ste. Marie Fire Services is hosting a free information seminar for owners and superintendents of multi-unit residential properties — in the hopes of teaching them about fire code violations instead of fining them.

As SooToday's James Hopkin has previously reported, the local fire department has levied some hefty fines over the past couple years against landlords who blatantly violate the Fire Code.

Local addresses previously targeted by Sault Fire Services include 314 Albert Street East456 Douglas Street138 East Street and 129 Pozzebon Crescent.

The seminar is scheduled for May 29 at 1:30 p.m. at City Hall, with a second session following at 6:30 p.m. Fire Prevention Officers will speak on fire safety and compliance with regulations.

The seminar will be in the Russ Ramsay room of the Civic Centre.

Sign-up is required and can be done so by contacting Public Education Officer Aaron Gravelle by phone at 705-949-3333 ext. 2246 or by email.

“The residential sector is still where we see the majority of our incidents,” Gravelle said in a release. “We want to ensure that all of our multi-unit residential buildings are compliant and safe for the occupants.”

Attendees will be provided with up to date information and education, along with answers to questions, to ensure that their building meets all the requirements of the Ontario Fire Code.
